AISD Menchaca Elementary School: From a One-Room Schoolhouse to a Modern 21 st-century Learning Campus

In November 2017, Austin voters overwhelmingly passed a $1 Billion bond designed to replace, modernize, improve, renovate and equip a significant portion of the Austin Independent School District’s (AISD) facilities.  Menchaca Elementary School was one of the first modernization projects completed in the 2017 Bond program.

The new AISD Menchaca Elementary School is the fifth version of the facility in the community. The campus consists of a new 99,000 square foot, partial two-story facility, and ancillary structures.

Encotech provided structural, mechanical, and plumbing engineering services for the new facility. The structural design included reviewing the geotechnical report to coordinate the proper building pad and foundation design. Encotech also provided the design for framing plans and lateral resisting systems. The plumbing team designed a gas boiler for a mechanical system and load analysis, sizing, layout, riser diagrams, and a hot water circulation loop design for water and wastewater and natural gas piping. The mechanical team designed a 4-pipe air-cooled chiller and the building automation controls. Encotech also provided ductwork design, zonal load analysis, sizing, and scheduling of HVAC equipment based on zoning. The outside air systems were designed to use energy recovery. Lastly, the team designed and located air registers, grills and temperature sensors, and condensate piping. The new school is an Austin Energy Green Building, and the campus was designed to meet LEED certification
