Downtown Chiller Plant Expansion:
A Practical Solution to Increasing Demand for Chilled Water Services

Due to downtown Austin’s rapid development and growth, the demand for chilled water services has increased significantly in recent years. District Cooling Plant No. 4 will provide 3,000 tons of additional cooling capacity to the chilled water distribution system.

Encotech conducted the initial engineering analysis to determine whether Austin Energy could consider adding a new chiller plant to the downtown system at the existing Austin Convention Center space. After our analysis indicated the feasibility of doing so, Encotech used its expertise and intimate knowledge of the project to deliver the most efficient option for Austin Energy.

Encotech’s expertise resulted in a design that required no additional strengthening of the existing structure. Encotech designed a system that sidestepped the existing structure’s limitations and leveraged its excess capacity to reduce required retrofitting.
